2011 GLG Games Boot Camp Blog
I completed my first week of the GLG Games Boot Camp (GLGBC) held at Rigsby Center in Safety Harbor, FL and would like to share my experiences in being part of that group.

I entered the GLGBC to try and condition myself so I could compete in ALL 2012 events without injuring myself in the process. I have the Gold Torch Award in my sights. I won it last year in my age division. This will be a totally new experience for me "being a defending champ". I spent my work years with GE and had no time for serious participation in sport (so I told myself).

The GLGBC is held every Tues and Thurs from 7:30am to 8:30am and cost $4 per secession for resident and non residents of SH.

The BC leader is a young lady named Donna who has a split personality. One part of her is a loving wife, mother and easy to get along with person. The other part comes out when she puts her boot camp hat on. With that hat on she took me serious that I wanted to become fit for all the events. I wear a heart rate monitor and it was at my peak rate for 59 minutes. The one minute reprieve was for water time.

I also found out that you better come warmed up because she starts right in. she recommends getting there early and warming up by walking or jogging "TWICE" around the center block. If you plan to come, do it or regret it.

"D2", as I like to call her, will focus on working the muscle groups associated with each sport so when I try that sport I should be less prone to injure myself. In the 2011 GLG's I broke my toe in the hammer throw. It’s a long story and is best told over a couple beers. This week we worked on jogging and sprinting (Also always stretching). I never sprinted in my life and learned a few things. Really, the last time I sprinted was when I was 18 trying to catch a piece of you know what. Anyway, D2 told me to stop complaining and sprint till I reach my heart rate limit. Dropping to your knees does not soften her up.

Even though I hurt all over I intend to give D2 no satisfaction by dropping out and will be there this Tues at 7:15am to start my warm up. Join me as I need someone I can count on to call 911. I asked D2 to do that this week and she just laughed!

2011 National Senior Games

Florida Senior Athletes collect over 200 medals at National Senior Games

Florida Senior athletes traveled to Houston, Texas for the 2011 National Senior Games and lived up the Lone Star State’s standard of doing everything bigger in Texas.

The Florida contingent of 496 senior athletes collected 242 overall medals (100 gold, 80 silver and 62 bronze), the second highest total of all states, behind only the host state of Texas. It is also the highest number of total medals won by Floridians at the biennial event on record since 2001. Over that period, Florida athletes, age 50 and over, have won 1,119 medals in National Senior Games events. The 2011 National Senior Games were held June 16-30 with competition in 20 sports.

As has been the case in the previous four National Senior Games, Florida swimmers brought home the most medals with a total of 80, winning 28 gold, 34 silver and 18 bronze medals. Track and Field athletes earned a total of 44 medals while Table Tennis players won 34 and Florida cyclists pedaled their way to 17 medals.Table Tennis – June 18-25
